A brush fire fed by strong winds burned about 35 acres along Maui Veterans Highway on Monday afternoon.

The fire was reported at 1:55 p.m. in an area south of the Maui Humane Society in Puunene, according to the Maui Fire Department. Crews arriving on scene found a fast-moving brush fire and worked to contain the blaze amid strong trade winds of 20 to 25 mph.

The Maui Police Department closed Maui Veterans Highway from North Kihei Road to Hansen Road shortly after 2:30 p.m., and the Maui Emergency Management Agency sent out online and mobile alerts on the brush fire and traffic closure. No evacuations were ordered.

By 3 p.m., the fire had burned 35 acres and was no longer advancing, fire officials said. As of 5 p.m., it was 70 percent contained.

Crews planned to remain on scene throughout the night to conduct mop-up operations and further secure the perimeter of the fire, MFD said.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Responding units included Engine 1 from Wailuku; Engine 6 from Kihei; Engine 10, Hazmat 10, Relief Engine 10, Tanker 10 and Relief Tanker 10 from Kahului; Tanker 14 from Wailea; the department’s Air One helicopter; and a battalion chief.

Multiple tankers and heavy equipment from Mahi Pono and the state Department of Transportation also assisted.
