A Gentleman Review

Cast: Sidharth Malhotra, Jacqueline Fernandez, Darshan Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Supriya Pilgaonkar, Rajit Kapur

Director: Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK

Quick take: Entertaining action comedy

Rating: 3/5

Raj & DK have their own distinct filmmaking style. A lot of their craft has a heavy American influence, their films always offer a healthy dose of action, comedy and plenty of style. A Gentleman is an action comedy that’s a lot smarter than its title. It’s a spy game meets hitman concept. One that has Knight & Day aspirations and a writing tone straight out of Guy Ritchie’s universe. The end result is a fun, high octane movie that requires a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief. It also helps if you’re a fan of either Sidharth Malhotra and/or Jacqueline Fernandez.

Its tagline says Sundar, Susheel… Risky. And that’s exactly the play of the first half of A Gentleman. Almost like it’s mimicking Judwaa, the film shows you two distinct Sidharth Malhotra characters. One is Gaurav and the other Rishi. Gaurav lives in Miami, works in an MNC has just bought a posh villa and a family wagon. Rishi on the other hand is the tuxedo wearing super agent who fights like Jackie Chan and pulls off outrageous missions like James Bond. The two are like chalk and cheese, and the big ploy is to figure out how they’re connected. Jacqueline Fernandez is Kavya, Gaurav's brash bestie who likes him, but doesn’t want to date Mr Goody two-shoes. The first half establishes the difference between the two characters, the interval point leads up to the two Sidharth meeting, while the second half explains the duality of their lives.

A Gentleman is like the old genre faithful, True Lies featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Its subtly cheesy and it makes use of the premise of a secret agent and his madcap adventure featuring his family and friends. Raj & DK's film is just as much fun as James Cameron’s lightweight entertainer. There’s also the usual slick music and dancing routine that makes this film a true masala offering. While it may not be the smartest movie ever made, it is however a thoroughly entertaining film. The movie also features cameos by Suniel Shetty, Rajit Kapoor and Supriya Pilgaonkar that are appropriately fun.

There isn’t a single serious bone in the A Gentleman framework. This outlandish action comedy draws its kicks from slick action and quirky dialogue. Even the lead actors just keep a straight face and go along with the script. And it works alright. Sidharth Malhotra gets to do everything you’d expect from a commercial hero. Six packs, workout routine, Ninjutsu inspired action, Chase’s, love making, it’s all packed in. Jacqueline handles the comedy, glamour and dancing. While Darshan Kumar plays the bad boy with elan. Smart writing and slick execution save this fickle film.
