The Maui Emergency Management Agency activated four sirens in West Maui on Saturday as a brush fire forced evacuations in the Kaanapali area.

The Maui Fire Department responded to a brush fire at about 12:45 p.m. Saturday at Kualapa Loop and Anapuni Loop mauka of the Kaanapali resort area, according to the county. Firefighters arrived on scene at about 12:55 p.m.

West Mahi Pua Place and Kualapa Loop were closed to traffic and evacuations were ordered in the area, with displaced residents told they could seek refuge at Napili Park.

The county said that MEMA activated four sirens around 1:10 p.m. from Wahikuli to Honokowai in the area to notify the community.

MFD was able to stop the progress of the 7-acre fire before it reached any homes or communities. Evacuation orders had been lifted as of 5 p.m. and the fire was 90 percent contained as of 6 p.m. No injuries or structural damage was reported. MFD was still investigating the cause of the fire.

Maui County urged the public to sign up for emergency alerts with active fire season still in swing. The alerts are sent to registered users via text message, email, pager and/or voicemail, based on preference. MEMA alerts allow public safety officials to provide emergency notifications and direction.
