He was educated at Linden McKinley High School, where he was involved in sports, including being a member of the American Football and basketball teams, leading the team to the state basketball championship, Class AAA. Later, he played basketball representing the Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens (1977 – 1978). For his achievements Buster has been inducted into the Coffeyville Community College Men’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Having played for Sinclair Community College (1979 – 1980), he continued his career playing in the team of Mercyhurst University. Afterwards, he decided to get back to Columbus to pursue a career in boxing, which later added huge sums to Buster Douglas net worth.

Douglas was also the main object of the video game “James ‘Buster’ Douglas Knockout Boxing” (1988).
