David was born the second of six children of Sharon Elizabeth ands Louis Harry Sedari, and is of Anglo-American (mother) and Greek (father) origin. David grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina where he attended Jesse O. Sanderson High School. Later he enrolled at Western Carolina University, but shortly after he moved to Kent State University from which he soon dropped out and began hitchhiking around the states. In 1983, David relocated to Chicago, Illinois where he enrolled at the School of Art Institute of Chicago, from which he graduated in 1987.

David Sedaris’ performing talent was discovered by the radio host and producer Ira Glass while David was reading his diary in one of Chicago’s numerous clubs, which he had kept since 1977 and his hitchhiking adventures. This occasion led to David’s involvement in “The Wild Room” weekly radio program, a success leading to David’s national radio debut on NPR in late 1992 when he was reading his “Santa Land Diaries”, which apparently wowed the audience. These ventures provided the basis for David Sedaris’ net worth and served as a launching board for his radio and comedy career.

The New York Times classified David’s “Santa Land Diaries” as “a minor phenomenon” and offered him a book deal. In 1994, he debuted as an author with a collection of essays and short stories named “Barrel Fever”. Soon after, he became regular on Chicago Public Radio show as well as “This American Life” and began writing essays for The New Yorker and Esquire magazines. In 1997, a new collection of essays – “Naked” – was released, later rewarded with a Randy Shilts Award. It is certain that all these achievements have helped David Sedaris to further increase his overall net worth.

David Sedaris has since published a dozen essays and story collections, which have been translated into 29 languages and sold over 10 million copies. Apart from those already mentioned above, the most popular are certainly “Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk: A Modest Bestiary” and more recently “Let’s Explore Diabetes With Owls” which was honored with a Grammy Award for Best Spoken Word Album. Besides these, David is also an author of several theater plays, alongside his sister Amy Sedaris with whom he appears under the name The Talent Family. Doubtlessly, all these accomplishments have added quite an impressive sum to the overall size of David Sedaris’ wealth.

When it comes to his personal life, David Sedaris currently lives in West Sussex, England, with his longtime partner, Hugh Hamrick.

1Memoir is the last place you'd expect to find the truth.
2Seven beers followed by two Scotches and a thimble of marijuana and it's funny how sleep comes all on it's own.

Concentrate too hard on the millions of people who hate you for what you are and you're likely to turn into one of those unkempt, sloppy dressers who sag beneath the weight of the two hundred political buttons they wear pinned to their coats and knapsacks.
6After a few months in my parents' basement, I took an apartment near the state university, where I discovered both crystal methamphetamine and conceptual art. Either one of these things are dangerous, but in combination they have the potential to destroy entire civilizations.
